The lead singer is Phyllis Boyens, who played Loretta Lynn's mother in the film, Coal Miner's Daughter. The other singer is Hazel Dickens, one of the greatest voices in bluegrass. Rounder Records has a CD called "Women's Coal Mining Songs" which has this and many other truly excellent songs on it.

Jean Ritchie is playing the dulcimer, singing one of the traditional Appalachian songs. These songs formed the basis of bluegrass and country music as they were adapted by bluegrass and country musicians. Yet some of the original songs were brought over from England, Scotland, and Ireland and are more than 500 years old.

This is Ralph playing one of the tunes he is well-known for creating: Clinch Mountain Backstep. This video also has Ralph's brother, Carter, playing guitar; Carter would die within a year or so of this video. George Shuffler is the other guitar player. The bass player and the fiddler didn't travel with the Stanley Brothers. Ralph's 3-finger style of banjo picking is a little different from that of Earl Scruggs.

Ever since I was a little kid, Harriet Tubman has been one of my greatest heroes. She was very brave and had great faith. She was smart and creative when she was under some of the greatest pressure a person can face.

I greatly admire people whose faith gives them courage to reach out to people, to take personal risks, and to do the right thing. Corrie Ten Boom's biography, which is excerpted here, recounts the bravery of her sister Betsie and her, as they hid Jews and then braved the camps when they themselves were caught.

This is a company in Sweden that specifically seeks people with Asperger Syndrome to work for them because Aspies have special skills that help. Isn't it neat that something some people call a "disability," other people call an "advantage"!!!
