I nominated audacity software. Audacity is recording software that allows you to record tracks. I have used this software for several years and it has helped me to do a number of interesting projects. In general, I love sourceforge.net and specifically I love audacity. Here is a podcast page I made to teach fiddle tunes.

It's called "Tuesdays in the Woodshed" because we used to practice on Tuesdays. If you scroll down to "Bayou Pon Pon" that says "fancy version," you will hear me playing two fiddle parts, guitar, and Cajun triangle--something that wouldn't have been possible without track recording. In general, open source software keeps us from being totally dependent on Bill Gates and it challenges mainstream software coders to do something better.
