I had the honor of meeting Homer Ledford a few times (and I played in an orchestra with one of his daughters). He was a great musician and a really nice person. He is another example of a talented, self-taught musician who was discovered during the "folk era." He came out on stage with a wheelbarrow full of instruments, all of which he would play during a show. He created a number of unique instruments.

Leadbelly was another discovery by the people who sought to preserve various types of home-made music.

Okay, this combines two really fantastic things: Cajun music and the folk festival at Augusta. Davis and Elkins College in the middle of West Virginia has a fantastic festival all summer long where each week is devoted to a different type of music. Cajun, Old Time, Bluegrass, Irish, etc. You learn music during the day and jam all night. The teachers are all people who are real experts in the music--during Cajun week, they bring a lot of folks from Louisiana to be teachers. Anyway, this is a sample from Cajun week--just a taste of a wonderful place and time.

Back when I used to buy vinyl records both new and used, I always looked for the Rounder label. Rounder records has preserved a lot of music that would otherwise have been lost and it focuses on real folk music (that is, music you might hear on someone's real back porch). My favorite Rounder record became a CD: Women's Coal Mining Songs.

Good ol' Woody Guthrie singing about the Dust Bowl. Traditional 12 bar blues verse structure.

Eddie LeJeune was a great Cajun accordion player and singer whose life was cut short at age 48. Traditional Cajun music is dance music and this is a terrific waltz.

The nice thing about streaming audio is that y'all can enjoy what us expatriate Kentuckians have been enjoying for years here in Central Ohio--the Bluegrass Ramble. It's on Saturday and Sunday evenings from 6 pm to midnight (unless Ohio State has a hockey game). Look for WOSU AM 820. If you're local to Central Ohio, they announce all the bluegrass-related events coming up and even local bluegrass news about people around here.
