I had the honor of meeting Homer Ledford a few times (and I played in an orchestra with one of his daughters). He was a great musician and a really nice person. He is another example of a talented, self-taught musician who was discovered during the "folk era." He came out on stage with a wheelbarrow full of instruments, all of which he would play during a show. He created a number of unique instruments.

Leadbelly was another discovery by the people who sought to preserve various types of home-made music.

There are a lot of stories about self-taught musicians who had to go to some lengths to get to play an instrument, whether it was by making a fiddle out of a cigar box or, in this case, sneaking one's brother's guitar out from under the bed. Elizabeth Cotton's story is also one that reminds us that artistic talent of various sorts may be hiding in plain sight.

Along with bluegrass, I love country music from the 1950's and 1960's. There is a certain sound there that has been since lost. Here is a great song by a great performer of that time. Interestingly enough, this song was written by Shel Silverstein.

Eddie LeJeune was a great Cajun accordion player and singer whose life was cut short at age 48. Traditional Cajun music is dance music and this is a terrific waltz.
